Background of the Study

Political participation and awareness of citizens' rights are key pillars of a functioning democracy. In Nigeria, the awareness and exercise of rights such as voting, freedom of speech, and access to justice can directly influence governance and societal development. Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, is a microcosm of the challenges faced by citizens across the country in terms of political engagement and awareness of their rights.

Although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to participate in political processes, barriers such as illiteracy, inadequate civic education, and economic constraints often hinder political participation, especially in rural areas like Lafia. This study seeks to investigate the level of citizens' awareness of their political rights in Lafia, Nasarawa State, and assess how this awareness influences their political participation in local and national elections.

Statement of the Problem

Despite Nigeria’s efforts to increase political participation, especially among the marginalized, many citizens in Lafia, Nasarawa State, still lack awareness of their fundamental rights, leading to low voter turnout and limited political engagement. There is a lack of comprehensive data on how citizens’ rights awareness impacts their level of participation in democratic processes in Lafia. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the relationship between awareness of rights and political participation in Lafia.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of citizens' political rights in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

  2. To examine the impact of rights awareness on citizens’ political participation in Lafia.

  3. To identify the barriers to active political participation and suggest strategies to overcome them.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are citizens in Lafia aware of their political rights?

  2. How does citizens' awareness of their rights influence their participation in elections and political processes in Lafia?

  3. What are the major barriers to political participation in Lafia, and how can they be overcome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a positive relationship between citizens’ awareness of their political rights and their level of participation in political processes in Lafia.

  2. Lack of awareness and civic education are significant barriers to political participation in Lafia.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Lafia, Nasarawa State, particularly its urban and rural residents, evaluating both the awareness of citizens’ rights and their level of political engagement. The study’s limitations include the potential bias in self-reported data and limited access to certain demographic groups due to logistical challenges.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Citizens’ Rights Awareness: The knowledge and understanding citizens have about their legal rights, especially political rights such as voting and free speech.

  2. Political Participation: Involvement of citizens in the political process, such as voting in elections, joining political parties, or engaging in public discourse.

  3. Barriers to Political Participation: Factors that inhibit or prevent individuals from participating in political activities, such as lack of education, financial constraints, and social discrimination.
