Background of the Study
Political participation and awareness of citizens' rights are key pillars of a functioning democracy. In Nigeria, the awareness and exercise of rights such as voting, freedom of speech, and access to justice can directly influence governance and societal development. Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, is a microcosm of the challenges faced by citizens across the country in terms of political engagement and awareness of their rights.
Although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to participate in political processes, barriers such as illiteracy, inadequate civic education, and economic constraints often hinder political participation, especially in rural areas like Lafia. This study seeks to investigate the level of citizens' awareness of their political rights in Lafia, Nasarawa State, and assess how this awareness influences their political participation in local and national elections.

This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the relationship between awareness of rights and political participation in Lafia.
